Soul Heaven at the Berwick Manor, Rainham

Who was your inspiration as a DJ?
Mike Raven (Strange sort of character who used to play blues, jazz and soul on the BBC before the days of Radio 1, bit like an early version of John Peel). Very laid-back style of presentation.

All of the artistes from the big soul labels of the 60’s (Chess, Motown, Stax and Atlantic in particular)

What musical artist would you invite to dinner?
Bluey from Incognito

How many records do you have in your collection?
Probably only about  2000 on vinyl now, around the same for cd’s, these days a large part of the collection is in the form of digital music on hard drives. I live in a very small bachelor flat so space for storage is at a premium.

Best live concert or performance you’ve seen?
Bill Withers together with Pieces of a Dream and Gerald Albright at the Dominion in Tottenham Court Road back in the mid eighties.

Away from music, what do you enjoy most?
Drinking good French red wine! Also enjoy a good book, classic cinema (Casablanca, Citizen Kane etc) and historical documentaries. Not really into sport but used to go to watch West Ham in my younger days, still look out for their match results.

What record would be played at your funeral?
‘It’s Over’ by The Funkmasters!

If you had to play one record to a stranger to describe you and your musical taste, what would it be?
Marvin Gaye ‘What’s Going On?’
